NEXT Receives $2.5 Million from the US Department of Energy for Its Low-Cost Transparent Solar Cells

Next Energy Technologies will receive $2.5 million from the U.S. Department of Energy for its transparent energy-harvesting coatings for commercial windows.  The award is part of the Department’s SunShot Initiative. NEXT will match the award itself.

NEXT is using soluble small molecule (SSM)-organic photovoltaic (OPV) technology to design the cells. The Building integrated Photovoltaic (BIPV) windows will be like traditional windows in appearance and functionality but they will also be competitive in the solar market.

NEXT is working toward a fully developed prototype with successful initial testing and certification testing and that is ready for pilot manufacturing. The SunShot Initiative aims to achieve a Levelized Cost of Energy of $0.03/kWh by 2030.

CEO of NEXT Energy Technologies Daniel Emmett said  “We at NEXT look forward to working with the U.S. Department of Energy as we progress our transparent solar technology toward commercialization with the aim of transforming buildings into producers of low cost solar energy.”
